Simple and Rustic Fall Wreaths

A couple of weekends ago we decided to make wreaths and took the boys for a walk to find materials.

There’s something about a fall Saturday with a good friend. I’m fortunate that one of my closest friends, Claire, has a son that’s just 6 months younger than my son, and they’ve been friends since they were babies. We were so excited to reunite these two little guys when we moved back to Austin, and afternoons like this recent one reminded me just how much I missed this sweet family.

A couple of weekends ago we decided to make wreaths and took the boys for a walk to find materials. We pre-gamed at Trader Joe’s for “hiking snacks,” then spent an hour or so rambling in the woods, jumping on rocks (the boys) and cutting a few branches that spoke to us (the moms).

Claire brought apple cider and mulling spices, because she’s the type of person to think of those things, and we set to work putting the wreaths together, sipping hot cider, and talking about everything from careers to parenting to The Bachelor franchise.

Putting these together is so simple, and the natural greenery hides imperfections. You’ll need a 12″ wire wreath frame, some 26 gauge crafting wire, scissors, and whatever strikes you from outside.

Fasten each piece of greenery to the wreath form by twisting 3-4 inches of wire with your hand, and loop the ends of the wire around the wreath form until it is (mostly) hidden.

Continue layering branches and berries until the wreath looks full, then hold upright to check if any pieces need additional wire. Then you’re all set!

How long will the wreath last? It depends on the greenery you use and the climate in which you live. These lasted about 2 weeks.
